The Maha Kumbh Mela has begun on 14th January at Allahbad. It is estimates that over 1.1 crore people from India and other countries will bath today (14th January).
The festival is billed as the biggest religious gathering in the world. In 2001, more than 40 million people gathered on the main bathing day at Allahabad, breaking a world record for the biggest human gathering.
The Ardh (half) Kumbh Mela is celebrated every six years at Haridwar and Allahabad, the Purna (complete) Kumbh takes place every twelve years, at four places Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. The Maha Kumbh Mela which comes after 12 ‘Purna Kumbh Melas’, or 144 years, is held at Allahabad.

According to the Hindu mythology, when Samudra Manthan took place,their was a fight between Ausurs and Devtas for Amrit. Seeing this,Lord Vishnu took the Amrit Kalash and went away.
That is why people take a holy bath in Ganga to wash out their sins.
